What’s Your Super Power?
I’m sure this will come as a complete surprise but… I. Am. Batman
…’s Mother.
The Caped Crusader has always been a favorite in our house. Yes, there was a short-lived (and adorable) Spiderman phase but, when push came to shove, it was Batman who won the day. Now that I think about it, really he won most of 1999 and 2000.
I think there is a very strong pull - in all of us - to want to be something more than we are. To be Super, if you will. To be The Hero.
And, although we may pack up the costumes and store them away as we get older, that draw is still there.
We often overlook, in our quests to be super, the powers that we a l r e a d y have.
I am fortunate to have a blended family with 4 girls and 2 boys. When I think about their super powers, I think about our EMT, who despite the amount of stress, blood, clothing, vomit, vehicles or bystanders, runs toward chaos instead of away from it. I think about our Math teacher and Coach who shows up daily in the lives of confused, smart, and challenging teenagers to encourage them toward greatness. Our nurse has an amazing capacity for soothing people and routinely has to create some type of peace for her patients. I think of our grad student passionate about food insecurity, politics and the underdogs. Our boys are equally as super - both of them stepping out of the traditional tract to find their own way in their own time.
These are the superpowers they already have: courage, perseverance, dependability, care, kindness, leadership, patience, encouragement.
When was the last time you took a moment to consider your own super power? Not the one that you’d want, per se, but the one you already have.
As we entertain ALL the Super Heroes tonight on Halloween (and maybe a few villains, as well), I challenge you to come up with 4 super truths about yourself.
